10th anniversary of abortion doctor's death marked by Trust Women activist group

Friday marked the 10th anniversary of the assassination of Wichita abortion Doctor George Tiller.

Tiller was shot in 2009 by Scott Roeder, while attending a church service.

During Roeder's trial, he admitted to killing Tiller, stating that he wanted to stop Tiller from performing late-term abortions.

Initially, Roeder was sentenced to 50 years in prison. However, a Supreme Court ruling made him eligible for parole after only 25. He was also sentenced to 24 months on three counts of aggravated battery; those would be added to the end of that 25 years.

Tiller was shot by another anti-abortion activist, Rachelle Renae Shannon, in 1993. She received a 10-year sentence.

The group, Trust Women, held an open mic night on Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. at Reverie Coffee Roasters in remembrance of Tiller. The organizers work to ensure that women have access to and control over their reproductive rights.
