Active shooter situation in Leavenworth leaves 2 injured

The shooter and one victim were injured in the incident which happened late Wednesday morning on Leavenworth’s Centennial Bridge around 11 a.m.  During a press conference Leavenworth Chief of Police Pat Kitchens said multiple law enforcement agencies were called to the bridge for what initially was thought to be a case of road rage. Officers instead found a heavily armed shooter on the bridge, and they believe he had been shooting randomly.

The incident came to an end when an active member of the military driving by spotted the shooter. Chief Kitchens said the soldier took action.

"[He] intervened by striking the shooter with his vehicle, causing [the shooter] to be critically injured," said Chief Kitchens.  "Ending the encounter with the active shooter and likely saving countless lives.”

The suspect, identified as a Platte County resident, was taken to a Kansas City hospital for treatment. One victim, another active-duty soldier assigned to Fort Leavenworth, was struck by gunfire and was transported to a Kansas City hospital as well. Kitchens said both, as of Wednesday afternoon, were in serious, but stable, condition.
