US: North Korean nuke work 'inconsistent with' disarmament

WASHINGTON (AP) — The commander of U.S. and allied forces in South Korea is telling a congressional panel that North Korean production of nuclear weapons materials and missiles is "inconsistent with" its broad pledge to denuclearize.

Army Gen. Robert Abrams also told the House Armed Services Committee on Wednesday that he has seen "little to no change" in the North's military capabilities, even as Washington seeks its nuclear disarmament.

Abrams says he is encouraged by what he called a significant reduction in tensions on the Korean peninsula over the past year.

He asserted, however, that the North has not taken substantial steps toward denuclearization. Asked whether the North has reduced its production of missiles and nuclear weapons materials, Abrams said their activities in that area are "inconsistent with denuclearization."
