Arrest made in Wichita carjacking

Wichita Police have arrested a 31 year-old man in connection with the carjacking event Wednesday in which 3 young children were inside a minivan.

Captain Brent Allred says Jason Barajas was a passenger in a silver SUV at a gas station in the 2100 blockof South Broadway when a 25 year-old woman left the van to go in the store. He discovered the keys were in the van and stole it.

Allred said police belive he didn't know the children were in the van, and when he discovered them, left the van in the 1500 block of South Gold.

Late Wednesday, police identified Barajas as a potential suspect of the carjacking, and 55 year-old Wesley Coleman as the driver of the SUV.

Barajas was arrested during a traffic stop at Kellogg and Tyler late Wednesday in a vehicle reported as stolen by the Sedgwick County Sheriffs office. They also identified Coleman and police arrested him later in a traffic stop in the 6200 block of West Kellogg.

Barajas has been charged with 3 counts of aggrevated kidnapping and aggrevated child endangerment, auto theft, posession of a controlled substance, drug paraphenalia, open container, and an outstanding warrant from Sumner county.

Coleman is charged with possession of drug paraphenalia. Other charges may be pending.

Captain Allred said the children, who rang in age from 6 months to 2 years, were not harmed, but were quite scared. They have been reunited with their family.
