MOUNDRIDGE, Kan. (KNSS) — Authorities have identified the man killed in the officer-involved shooting in McPherson County late Monday night as 24-year-old William Matthew Holmes of Newton.

According to Newton Police Lt. Bryan Hall, the shooting followed a chase that started in Newton.  Holmes was the driver of the vehicle that exceeded 100 mph during the chase and then refused to get out of the vehicle when it stopped near Moundridge.

Lt. Hall says officers used non-lethal means to try and subdue Holmes, who was combative. He says Holmes was shot when he tried to take a Newton officer's gun during the struggle.

24-year-old Kenneth Carl Herrod of Newton was a passenger in the vehicle and was arrested on charges of burglary, theft and felony obstruction.
