More than two weeks ago, a man was beaten in the northeast part of Wichita; he has now died. This has led to the arrest of 35-year-old Steven Speakman of Wichita.

The violence happened at about 2:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 21st, as police responded to a disturbance in the parking lot of the Dillons grocery store at 21st & Rock. Police at the scene found 33-year-old Haley Collins of  Bel Aire unconscious; he was hospitalized in critical condition.

Investigators believe the two men were acquaintences, and they argued at that location. At one point, Speakman physically battered Collins, causing his injuries. Collins died on Thursday, more than two weeks after he was attacked.

Speakman was originally booked into jail after the incident for aggravated battery; after Collins' death, Speakman is now charged with first-degree murder. This is Wichita's 21st criminal-homicide case of the year.
