A Kansas City police officer is alive today because of the bulletproof vest he was wearing during a shooting at a shopping center.

The Kansas City Police Department says that the officer was working off-duty in a shopping center when he was shot Saturday morning around 1 a.m.

The officer was on his way to investigate some noises he had heard when several gunshots sounded from a wooded area.

The officer retreated, called in for help, then realized he had been shot in the chest.

The police department says that the bullet from the suspect did not penetrate his bulletproof vest. The officer did not fire his weapon.

The officer was taken to the hospital, where he is in fair condition.

KCPD is currently investigating the shooting.

The name of the officer has not been released.
