City to annex land for tiny homes development

The Wichita City Council discussed possible annexation of land in the eastern part of the county for a tiny homes development.

The development, called Home Base, would have 90 lots, with floor plans ranging from 400 to 576 square feet.

Residents in the area, whose homes cost between $300,000 to $1 million dollars, are opposed to the smaller homes potentially being built in their backyards.  They are concerned that their home values will plunge.

During the public agenda segment of the meeting, Russ Hamker was one of several people voicing his concern over the spot where the tiny homes would be going in.  He said “it’s a great concept, unfortunately it’s a terrible location.”

The council went into executive session for 15 minutes to discuss the issue.  Ultimately, they voted yes to annex the land near 143rd Street East and Harry.
