Commission: No more investigations of Sedgwick County leadership

July 24, 2019 - 12:21 pm

There will be no further investigations of Sedgwick County leadership.

The Sedgwick County commission had made a motion in October to investigate, after Sedgwick County Manager Michael Scholes had helped the FBI with their campaign spending investigation of Commissioner Michael O’Donnell.

Scholes was ultimately fired by the commission in December.  O’Donnell was acquitted on 21 counts of wire fraud in March.

Commissioner Pete Meitzner made a motion to drop any additional investigations and Chairman David Dennis was happy to put it behind them.  "I'm glad that we're ready to move forward, and remain focused both on our staff of great folks that are working for our citizens every day and stay focused on the 500,000 citizens in Sedgwick County," he said.

The motion passed unanimously.

In other county news, Manager Tom Stolz presented the first hearing of the 2020 Sedgwick County Budget.

Currently, the budget stands at just over $437.3 million, thanks to a property tax amount of nearly $149.2 million.  It's based on a mill levy of 29.259.

The budget is expected to be approved at the August 7 meeting.
