Trying to stop the rise in copper thefts, Crime Stoppers of Wichita/Sedgwick County has started a month-long campaign called "Find a Fence"; a "fence" is a person knowingly buying the stolen metals, or those turning a blind eye suspecting the metals might be stolen.

The City of Wichita has lost hundreds of thousands of dollars during the last two years because of damage and replacement costs to facilities and properties. Thieves recently stole copper from the lights on the bike paths along the Arkansas River near Cowtown.

Crime Stoppers is increasing the normal minimum payout to $500 for tips leading to arrests involving persons buying stolen copper, and the maximum amount could also increase beyond $2,500, depending on the case. The Crime Stoppers phone number is 267-2111, and all tips through calls, online, or the PC mobile app are anonymous.
