Derby residents to vote on school bond issue

February 17, 2018 - 7:51 pm

On Tuesday, Derby residents will get the chance to vote on a school bond issue with a $123-million dollar price tag.

The school bond project will help to fund maintence updates, build a new elementary school and add several safety upgrades, such storm shelters and intruder lock hardware on the buildings' doors.

Those for the measure point to the needs for safety, security and updated schools, while those against the measure believe that simply fixing the old elementary school would save a lot of money.

The 123 million dollars would come from a tax increase of less than ten dollars per every $100,000 home. The plan would stretch the expenses over a 25-year period and would start being paid in the fall of 2018.

Voting polls open Tuesday morning at 6 a.m. and will close at 7 p.m.
