Police are investigating a shooting in a home invasion involving an off-duty police officer this morning west of 21st and Maize. Around 3:17 a.m. police were called to the officer's home.

Wichita Police Chief Gordon Ramsay says an armed man entered the home of the officer and the two exchanged gun shots. The officer was wounded in the leg, a 24-year-old man was wounded more than once. He has since died.

The officer's wife and children were in the home, but none of them were injured.

The suspect is identified as Christian Webb. The handgun he used in the incident was discovered to be stolen. The officer was treated and released from the hospital.

Chief Ramsay says it's not known if the officer was targeted. He noted that several cars in the area had been broken into. He said it's likely that Webb found an open door to enter the home as there were no signs of a forced entry.
