The death of an 11-year old boy in Newton has shocked both his family and his community.
The Newton Kansan reports that Payton Rose's mother, Jennifer, found her son not breathing in his bed over the weekend.
According to his family, Payton had had a sore throat and went to the doctor on Friday. A chest x-ray showed nothing amiss; neither did a throat swab or check of his tonsils. He was prescribed ibuprofin and sent home.
Payton was still struggling with his throat on Friday night and went to sleep in his mother's room. But at some point, he left her bed and went to his own. She later found him not breathing.
Payton's family is awaiting autopsy results. Initial guesses point to a possible throat infection.
