Environmentalist warning Kansas about possible mosquito boom

Recent flooding has created an increase in standing water,  and now an environmentalist says we may soon see an increase in mosquitoes. KSN News spoke with Marc Murrell, Director of the Great Plains Nature Center, who says the best medicine, along with repellant, is to get ahead of the problem.

"They can lay 500 eggs in the next week or two," said Murrell.  "It is like opening up a daycare for mosquitoes when we have this much water. Get rid of water in kids toys, swimming pools, bird baths, spare tires, buckets, things like that. That water is where mosquitoes breed."

Murrell says mosquitoes can carry the deadly West Nile virus. He suggests wearing long sleeve shirts or long pants and using a repellent that has DEET in it and is EPA approved.
