Estes says election shows Kansas still GOP state

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) —  Republican Ron Estes says his victory in a special congressional election in Kansas shows that it remains a solid GOP state.

Estes said in his victory speech Tuesday night that his campaign showed political pundits and national media that they were wrong in suggesting he could lose the race to Democrat and Wichita civil rights attorney James Thompson.

Estes is the state treasurer. He held off a stronger than expected challenge from Thompson to claim the south-central Kansas seat formerly held by CIA Director Mike Pompeo.

It was the first special congressional election since Donald Trump's election as president.

Estes said he will go to Washington to work for a balanced budget amendment to the U.S. Constitution and to repeal the 2010 health care law championed by former President Obama.
