A house fire this morning in the Riverside area of north Wichita. Firefighters were called to the 2300 block of north Burns around 8:35. Battalion Chief John Turner says a passerby reported the fire.
Due to the heat, and dangerous conditions, firefighters had to make several searches to find the resident inside.
Turner said on the third search, the body of 82 year-old Bettie Clark Johnson was found under a pile of debris. She lived alone in the home.
Investigators have not determined the cause of the blaze as yet. Firefighters were on the scene for three hours.
Due to the heat of the day combined with the fire, fire crews were changed regularly. Still, three firefighters were treated for heat exhaustion.
