A man died in a traffic crash in the east part of Wichita.

At about 2:30 a.m. Tuesday, a 64-year-old woman contacted authorities, telling them her son was suicidal and speeding in a Tahoe near Central & Webb.

Officers located the vehicle and tried to stop it, but the driver sped away to the east.

The police pursuit was called off quickly, because of the high speeds, and the deteriorating condition of the roadways during a winter storm.

The driver continued east-bound on Central, ramming the Tahoe into the concrete wall of the tunnel underneath the Beechcraft runway; the impact caused the car to burst into flames.

The 36-year-old man died at the scene of the crash.
