WICHITA, Kan. - An apartment fire in northwest Wichita has left over a dozen people homeless.

Fire crews were called to a 4-plex apartment in the 9000 block of West Westlawn, near 21st and Tyler, just after noon on Sunday. When they arrived, neighbors indicated that there were several people still inside one of the units. Rescuers made a search of the complex, but were unable to find anyone inside. Their search was hampered as furniture was blocking doors inside of the residence. The missing residents showed up about an hour later.

With the hot temperatures, both from the weather and the fire, Battalion Chief John Turner says several firefighters were evaluated and one transported to a local hospital for heat-related injuries.

Turner says fire damage was extensive to all four units in the complex and the 12 to 15 residents who live in the building will all be displaced. Investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the fire.
