The namesake of Freddy's Frozen Custard, Freddy Simon died Sunday morning. He was 95.

Freddy's Frozen Custard was founded in 2002 by Freddy's sons Bill and Randy, and their friend and business partner Scott Redler. The three men named the restaurant after Freddy, a World War II veteran.

According to the restaurant's website, Freddy grew up on a farm near Colwich, Kansas. Freddy spent years fighting in places around the Pacific Rim during World War II and earned the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star.

Freddy worked for 56 years while raising his family and has participated in veterans groups and World War II memorial events across the U.S.
