There was gunfire and a high-speed chase on the streets throughout the west part of Wichita on Wednesday morning.

Deputy police chief Troy Livingston says before 10:00 a.m., a resident saw mail being stolen, and followed a man and a woman to a business in the 700 block of N. Gilda, just west of I-235 & Central.

Police say the male suspect fired gunshots inside the business, then more shots outside at officers in the parking lot. Officers returned fire at the suspect, who sustained a bullet wound to his lower jaw.

Police say the suspect then stole a car, fired his gun at an officer near I-235 & Central, and swerved at an officer trying to put down stop-sticks in the road at Maple & Meridian. Some reports indicate the chase reached speeds near 80 miles per hour.

The suspect crashed his car at Maple & Maize, and he was arrested with the help of a Wichita police dog.

All five officers involved with the shooting are veterans of at least 18 years with the Department, and per policy, two of them have been placed on administrative leave during the investigation.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is looking into this case. The female suspect was arrested on N. Gilda; police say they are familiar with the male suspect, who has a criminal history.
