TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — The first female candidate running for statewide office in Kansas this year has made her bid for secretary of state official.

The Hutchinson News reports that Lucy Steyer, 17, (D-Lenexa), named her father as campaign treasurer on Tuesday.

The high school senior is the sixth teenage candidate running for statewide office in Kansas this year. The other five teens are boys and running for governor.

Until Steyer, no candidates for statewide office were women. Steyer wrote in an email to the newspaper that she is "most definitely excited to be a part of the movement to engage young voters and to encourage political involvement among all ages."

Kansas has no age requirement for most state offices.
