A cold front has arrived in south-central Kansas, bringing wind chills down into the teens. Wind chills are expected to start out below zero by Saturday morning.

The Emergency Winter Shelters (EWS) operated by Inter-Faith Ministries in Wichita will remain open all day Saturday because of the severe cold weather. Men and women stay in separate shelters. They can check in starting at 6 p.m. on Friday.

“We always look at weekend or holiday forecasts,” said Program Director Christen Sampamurthy. “When day shelters aren’t open we need to ensure people stay safe and warm in bad weather.”

IFM has been averaging 95 men and 27 women nightly at the EWS, which are open November 1 through March 31.

Sunday morning clients will be able to stay in the shelter until about 8 a.m. IFM currently does not plan to keep the shelter open Sunday during the day but will again allow people in at 6 p.m.

Snow is also expected to be a part of this storm system; anything from a dusting up to a half-inch of snow is expected in the Wichita area on Saturday night/Sunday morning.
