Judge denies dismissal of first charges against Sedgwick Co. Commissioner O'Donnell

August 17, 2018 - 7:35 pm

A judge denied Sedgwick County Commissioner Michael O'Donnell of a dismissal of previous charges in federal court Friday.

KSN News reports that O'Donnell currently faces 26 counts, including 23 counts of wire fraud and three counts of money laundering for use of his "Michael for Kansas" and "Michael for Sedgwick County" accounts for personal use.

The judge heard arguments Friday from O'Donnell's attorneys alleging that donors can't control the way funds are used once donated.

The judge told his team he has narrow avenues for dismissing these federal charges and ultimately denied the dismissal of earlier charges for O'Donnell.

O'Donnell has pleaded not guilty to the original 12-count indictment. He is expected to enter a plea on the most recent charges on August 28.
