The Kansas Department of Health & Enviornment has issued Health Warnings for five ponds and lakes due to blue-green algae. They include Atchison County Park Lake in Atchison County, Carbondale West Lake in Osage County, Clarion Woods Park Lake in Shawnee County, Melvern Outlet Pond and Swim Pond in Osage County, and Webster Lake Beach in Rooks County.
The KDHE news release says avoid activities that involve direct contact with the water for humans, pets and livestock. The alert said boating and fishing may be safe. Fish caught in the lakes may be safe if they are rinsed with clean water and only the filet portion is consumed.
