Kunze's memory honored in Topeka

May 04, 2019 - 3:31 am

Sheriff Deputy Kunze was somebody who really cared about his community and the people that he served.

On Friday, hundreds of fellow officers and family members helped to remember him by adding his name, along with four others, to a memorial in Topeka that celebrates those who have died in the line of duty.

Kunze was shot and killed in 2018 while attempting to arrest a suspect. The suspect shot Kunze; he fired back and killed the suspect, potentially saving the lives of people nearby.

Attorney General Derek Schmidt says that it's important for the community to say "thank you" to those who have sacrificed to keep others safe. He says that the outpouring of support for Kunze speaks volumes about who he was as an officer, husband and dad.
