Late afternoon fire displaces twenty-eight people

Twenty eight people have lost their home due to a late afternoon fire that heavily damaged the Raintree Apartment complex near Central and Ridge Road in west Wichita.

Wichita Fire Chief Tammy Snow says when crews arrived on scene, they could see flames and smoke from a building at the southwest corner of the complex.

It has been confirmed that the fire started in the attic of the building. The wind helped to fan the flames that ended up consuming about half of the building's roof.

No residents nor firefighters were injured during the blaze.

Snow says the property manager will be able to relocate the 28 people displaced by the fire to other units, but the American Red Cross was called to help residents replace necessity items like clothing and food.

The building is a total loss and will need to be rebuilt.
