Law Enforcement Crackdown for Safety

WICHITA, Kan. (KNSS) - Sedgwick County Sheriff's Deputies joined law enforcement agencies in 6 midwestern states in extra enforcement of traffic laws in an effort to promote safety on the roads.

From Friday, July 21 through Sunday July 23, deputies were vigilant in looking for speeders, non-restraint use, and impaired or distracted drivers in an effort to reduce disabling injuries and deaths.

During the weekend enforcement, deputies in Sedgwick County issued 77 traffic citations. 22 of those were for speeding, and 2 were for sealtbelt violations.

In addition, 10 felony arrests were made. Five drug and 6 DUI offenders were also arrested.

Sheriff's Lt. Len Dehning said in a release that deputies worked 13 vehicle crashes in the county during that weekend. Five of those were speed related.

Lt. Dehning said the safety effort was conducted during the normal course of duty, and was not supported by any grant.
