Lawrence Police Officer Pleads Not Guilty to DUI

LAWRENCE, Kan. - A former Lawrence police officer has pleaded not guilty on Wednesday to charges that he was driving under the influence when he was involved in a motor vehicle accident that killed the driver of a motorcycle.

The Lawrence Journal-World reports that the officer, 51-year-old Robert Heafy, is accused of operating or attempting to operate a vehicle with a blood or breath alcohol level of 0.08 or more. A police report shows Heafy's blood alcohol content was 0.198 soon after the accident.

The accident occured in July. The driver of the motorcycle was 56-year-old Jesse del Campo Jr. The misdeamor DUI charges were brought up against Heafy in September.

Heafy has since resigned from the department. His next court appearance is scheduled for December 5.
