Local recreation center hit by vandals

May 31, 2019 - 6:51 pm

Edgemore Park, a local recreation center in Wichita took significant damage on Wednesday night, leaving summer campers and counselors angry, frustrated, and wondering why.

Surveillance video of the scene shows people approach the center from the south, and use baseball bats to smash ten windows. Wichita police said it caused about $5,000 in damage.

Plywood covers the broken windows, now, and according to Alan Taber, director of recreation at the center, it has weighed heavily on camp counselors and young campers.

A motive in the case has not been established yet. Taber worries that parents will worry about sending their children to the park because of what is apparently around the neighborhood. Occasional damage has happened in the past, but never as bad as this incident.

The vandalism hasn't affected any camp activities at this time, but people have been denied access to the rooms where the windows are broken because they rent them out. While waiting is all they can do, Taber said he is using this as a teaching moment for the children.

No arrests have been made at the time and the crime is still under investigation.
