A 49-year-old man from Arkansas was killed and two other people from out-of-state were injured after multiple crashes on the Kansas Turnpike; it happened at about 1:00 a.m. Thursday involving four vehicles south of Mulvane.

The initial crash occurred when an axle on the Peterbilt truck seized, causing the driveshaft to break. A Volvo then rear-ended the truck.

The passenger in the Volvo, 49-year-old Stanley R. Sims, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver, a 45-year-old woman, was transported to Wichita's Wesley Medical Center in serious condition. The driver and passenger in the Paterbilt were not injured, both are from Oklahoma.

After the first crash, a Cadillac PC slowed down, and a GMC SUV rear-ended it. A 43-year-old woman from Iowa driving the SUV was transported to Wesley Medical Center for injuries.
