Missouri man sentenced to death in girl's murder

A former middle-school football coach convicted of abducting and killing a 10-year-old Missouri girl has been sentenced to death.

On Thursday, Circuit Judge Thomas Mountjoy sentenced 49-year-old Craig Wood to death for the February 2014 murder of Hailey Owens. Wood was convicted of first-degree murder in November.

Before Wood learned his punishment, Mountjoy refused to consider Woods' attorneys request for a new trial. The attorneys called the judge-imposed death sentence unconstitutional.

Wood kidnapped Hailey off a Springfield, Missouri, street in broad daylight in front of horrified witnesses. He took her to his home, where he raped her and shot her in the head. Her body was discovered in his basement.

The case prompted an Amber Alert in Kansas.
