More electric scooters coming to Wichita

The Wichita City Council discussed electric scooters at their Tuesday meeting.

The council voted to approve the use of electric scooters in bike lanes and on bike paths but not sidewalks, with a speed limit of 15 mph. A scooter operator must be at least 18 years old and can use the scooter until 9 p.m. or dusk, whichever is later.

Multiple scooter companies will be allowed in the city during the year-long pilot project, and each will be allowed to operate a fleet size of 100 to 500 scooters.

Mayor Jeff Longwell said the work on this technology is not yet complete.

"I agree with what council member (Cindy) Claycomb said, we really do want this to come back to us for a full evaluation at the end of the pilot," he said.

The ordinance will allow city staff to impound scooters that are blocking pedestrian travel or are a hazard.
