More road construction ahead

For some Wichita drivers, relief is on the way.

The Wichita city council approved funding to help bring major improvements to Pawnee between Webb and Greenwich Road in southeast Wichita.  The proposed design will make this section of Pawnee a three lane road with underground sewer.  Currently this section of highway has two lanes, with ditches on each side.

The proposed design also includes a six-foot sidewalk on one side of the street and a 10-foot multi-use path on the other.  The three lane road will provide the capacity to meet projected 2040 traffic counts.   Right now around 6,000 vehicles use the road per day and that count is forecast to double in the next 20 years.

Construction is planned for 2022 but may come a year earlier thanks to federal funding.

The council also approved an extension to the downtown Hilton Garden Inn project, which was slated to open in March.  It was delayed as developers halted the project to design a roof-top pool that will overhang Douglas.  The developers now have until the end of March 2019 to complete the project and will suffer severe penalties if they don't.
