A security guard was shot by a shoplifting suspect in the northwest part of Wichita; it happened Monday afternoon at the Menards store at 37th Street North & Maize Road.

The loss-prevention officer, a 34-year-old man, noticed a woman and a man as they were leaving the store, carrying a home-surveillance system worth nearly $260 they had not paid for. The guard made contact with the suspects outside the store, and the male suspect produced a handgun, shooting the guard in the abdomen.

The shooting victim was hospitalized, and released.

Both suspects got into a black Mercedes station wagon with Montana license plates bearing the word WHOOF, driving away to the south. That same car was spotted and involved in a high-speed chase with law enforcement early Tuesday afternoon; the car ended up spinning out and rolling over at Buckner & Meadowlark in Derby. The woman in the car Tuesday was hospitalized in critical condition.
