Sedgwick County Commissioner to return to court Friday

Sedgwick County Commissioner Michael O’Donnell will return to federal court today, this time hoping to dismiss a number of the charges filed against him by federal investigators, accusing him of wire fraud and money laundering.

Federal investigators allege that O’Donnell diverted $10,500 from his campaign accounts to his and his friends' bank accounts. This was money he was supposed to be using to run for office.

A new indictment has dropped the ethics violations but brought the total counts of wire fraud and money laundering to 26.

O’Donnell remains on the county commission and pleaded not guilty to initial charges in May.

The motions hearing on Friday claims that the counts against O’Donnell should not be tried by the federal government. In the dismissal motion filed, O’Donnell’s attorney argued that the ethics counts should be handled by the state and not federal prosecutors.
