Sedgwick County Sheriff's officer dies in shooting

A Sedgwick County Sheriff's Deputy has died after a shooting in rural Sedgwick County. It happened Sunday afternoon before 2 p.m. near the intersection of 295th St. W. and 53rd St. N.

Deputy Robert Kunze III was investigating the report of a suspicious person in the area.  A second deputy dispatched found Deputy Kunze and a suspect both suffering from gunshot wounds.  The suspect died at the scene, Deputy Kunze was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. 

Sedgwick County Sheriff Jeff Easter says the suspect has been linked to several crimes that happened earlier that day, including the theft of a weapon found at the crime scene.

Sheriff Easter said Kunze started his career in law enforcement with the Shawnee County Sheriff's Office, where he served for six years. He began his service with the Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office in 2006, and served the department for 12 years. He leaves behind a wife and a daughter. Easter called Kunze a great asset who was always available to serve at a moments notice.
