Southeast Kansas Sheriff concerned about dangerous highway

The Chautauqua County Sheriff is concerned about a section of K-99 where 2 fatal crashes have happened over a period of 9 days.  Most recently on April 28th an Arkansas man died on K-99 between Sedan and the Elk County line.

Chautauqua County Sheriff Richard Newby tells KSN News there were 19 accidents on that stretch of road last year. In 2019 he says there have already been 11.

"There's been multiple layers, re-layering of the road and every time it gets a little taller and a little narrower," said Sheriff Newby. "And there's one area we just went out and measured where it's right at 18 inches, almost a straight drop right at the edge of the white line."

The Sheriff says they have tried numerous times over the past several years to get KDOT to fix that road.  Just Tuesday, a box truck overturned in the same location inches from a memorial cross at the side of the road.
