Standoff over following the shooting of two Kansas law enforcement officers

A manhunt and standoff is over in Rice County.  It started with a traffic stop just after 5 p.m. in Sterling, Kan.  Rice County Undersheriff Chad Murphy was shot making that traffic stop and police soon surrounded a home 15 miles away from the scene of the shooting in Raymond, Kan. where they believed the suspect fled. After arriving at that home, Rice County Sheriff Bryant Evan was shot and a standoff ensued.

During the overnight hours officers entered the home and found two men dead inside.  The identities of the deceased were not revealed, but the Rice County Sheriff's Office says there is no longer a threat to the public. 

Undersheriff Murphy was shot in the neck and flown to a Wichita hospital for treatment.  He is listed in critical but stable condition.  Sheriff  Evan was shot in the leg and was listed in good condition.

The suspect was identified as 37-year-old David Madden, a known absconder from the Kansas Department of Corrections, and has also been involved in a missing person investigation from 2015.  In 2017 Madden was involved in a police chase.  He was found in possession of a machine gun, and several other unregistered guns and pipe bombs were also discovered on his property.

A massive manhunt is underway in Rice County.  Authorities say a man there, shot two law enforcement officers.

The shooting happened Monday afternoon, at what may have been a traffic stop in Sterling.  

Undersheriff Chad Murphy was shot in the neck and flown to a Wichita hospital for treatment.  Sheriff Bryant Evan was shot in the leg.  Their conditions have not been released.

Multiple agencies are now searching for the suspect, identified as David Madden, 37.  Fifteen miles from the shooting site, law enforcement have surrounded a home in Raymond, where they believe the suspect may be hold up.

The suspect is a known absconder from the Kansas Department of Corrections, and has also been involved in a missing person investigation from 2015.  

In 2017 Madden was involved in a police chase.  He was found in possession of a machine gun, and several other unregistered guns and pipe bombs were also discovered on his property.
