Super Guppy aircraft coming soon to Wichita

October 27, 2018 - 12:52 am

An NSA aircraft resembling a giant fish is scheduled to arrive at Wichita's Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport Nov. 7.

The Super Guppy will be picking up and transporting some restored historic Apollo 11 mission-control consoles back to the Johnson Space Center in Houston.

The restoration is taking place in Hutchinson, with a pickup in Wichita.

The consoles restored by the Kansas Cosmosphere's Spaceworks Division in Hutchinson will be the centerpiece of an entire restoration of the mission operations control room, set to be finished in time for the 50th anniversary of the historic Moon landing, according to the Cosmosphere.

Representing the Cosmosphere, Jack Graber says it 's "very humbling" to be part of the historic restoration project. He added that the guys who sat behind the original consoles  and flew the original missions are the real heroes."
