Wichita police said a 32-year-old suspect is dead after he tried to enter a home in the 1800 block of S. Topeka early Wednesday.

Police arrived at the home and found the suspect and a 35-year-old male resident with gunshot wounds.

Police said the suspect went to the home armed with a gun. When he knocked, the 35-year-old male denied him entry.

“The 32-year-old male fired one round striking the 35-year-old male,” said Capt. Brent Allred, Wichita Police Department. “The 32-year-old forced open the door went inside. The 35-year-old male retrieved a handgun and fired several rounds at the 32-year-old male.”

Both men were taken to the hospital. The suspect died. Police said the shooting wasn’t random.

“We believe this could be drug-related,” said Capt. Allred.

No names have been released.
