About 54 million Americans have osteoporosis and many don't know they are at risk of developing weak bones. Today is World Osteoporosis Day.  Dr. Angus B. Worthing is chairman of the American College of Rheumatology's Government Affairs Committee.

"Anybody over the age of 50 years, who has risk factors for osteoporosis should talk to their doctor about getting screened.  And all women over the age of 65 and men over 70 should receive a screening test called a DEXA scan, which is a simple kind of x-ray test," Dr. Worthing said.

For women, the chances of breaking a bone are greater than that of a heart attack, stroke and breast cancer combined.
