Tornado causes injuries, heavy damage in Eureka

5 taken to the hospital, one with critical injuries

Storms rolling across Kansas Tuesday struck Greenwood County and the city of Eureka with a tornado Tuesday night. The National Weather Service reports a tornado touched down in Eureka around 7:21 p.m. Five people reported injured as a result of the tornado, one taken to the hospital in critical condition. 

Governor Jeff Colyer declared a State of Disaster Emergency proclamation and Greenwood County has declared a state of local disaster.  A shelter has been opened by The American Red Cross for displaced residents at the Methodist Church on Main Street in Eureka. 

KSN News spoke with Eureka Fire Chief Doug Williams who said they have heavy damage to residences and businesses in Eureka along with downed trees and power lines.  Evergy reports more than 5000 customers were without power.

The National Weather Service received numerous reports of tornadoes with gusty winds, heavy rain, and large hail in the Potwin, El Dorado, and Rose Hill areas.
