Fire crews had to work quickly to pull two men out of the rain-swollen Little Arkansas River Monday.

Around 3:20 p.m., crews responded to a submersion call in the 300 block of West Ness Street in Valley Center. Initial dispatch reports indicated there could have been a vehicle involved.

The Valley Center Fire Department says that two men in their early 20's were canoeing when their boat flipped.

One of the victims was able to swim to a sand dune in the middle of the river while the other was stuck in the water. A neighbor saw them in the river and called for help.

Rescuers were able to reach both men and pull them to safety. There were no injuries.
