A homeless woman and man were shot in downtown Wichita, leading police to arrest another homeless person, 45-year-old Dexter Solomon.

At about 8:00 a.m. Sunday, a bicyclist found a 33-year-old woman and a 50-year-old man lying on the sidewalk, suffering from gunshot wounds near Broadway & Lewis, north of Kellogg.

Police Capt. Brent Allred says about this time, Solomon began calling 911, his underage daughter out of town, and a local television station, telling them about his involvement with the shooting, and that he believed the victims were working for what he called "the cartel".

Police believe there is no "cartel," and that the suspect at the time was experiencing a mental-health crisis, possibly induced by methamphetamines. Officers located the suspect south of Kellogg, in the 900 block of S. Market, and a handgun was located in a back yard there.

The male shooting victim suffered five gunshot wounds, to his arm and lower legs; he was treated and released from the hospital. The female victim was shot once in the back, and she was hospitalized in extremely critical condition.

The suspect was booked into jail for two counts of attempted murder, and possession of a firearm by a felon.
