Wellington Public Library cleaning up after flooding

June 15, 2019 - 10:21 am

The Wellington Public Library is cleaning up after record rainfall last month flooded both the children's area and the community room.

The downstairs area of the library was evacuated due to the large amount of groundwater that came in from the walls. The two sump pumps the library uses to keep the area dry were both knocked out.

The carpet and sheetrock was soaked, staffers tried to use fans to dry up the carpet but it didn’t do much. Volunteers began working to make electrical repairs.

Tom Kohmetscher, board chair for the library says that no books were damaged.

Now the work begins to reinforce the building’s foundation and to keep water away. The building, dating back to 1887, is included in the National Register of Historic Places.
