Wichita candidate selected for vacancy in Kansas House

Appointment runs until January

A Republican candidate has been appointed to fill a short-term vacancy in the same Kansas House seat that he is running for.

Wichita businessman Michael Capps was selected Saturday by Republicans in the 85th District to replace former state Rep. Chuck Weber who stepped down earlier this month to become executive director of the Kansas Catholic Conference.

The appointment runs until January, the end of the two-year term Weber won in 2016.

The Wichita Eagle reports that Democrats have alleged Capps does not live at the address he listed in filing to run for the House seat but the State Objections Board rejected their challenge in June.

Capps is the only Republican seeking the seat. The lone Democrat is Monica Marks.
