Wichita City council approves new ordinance for pawnbrokers, other dealers

At Tuesday morning’s Wichita City council meeting, the group approved a new ordinance for pawnbrokers and other secondhand dealers.

Wichita Police will implement an electronic reporting process for pawnshop, secondhand, and precious metal dealers and also establish requirements for businesses who operate kiosks to purchase or recycle electronic devices.

Deputy Chief Jose Salcido says the current process is inefficient and labor intensive and adds: "electronic reporting would improve the reporting process and increase the department's ability to investigate stolen property claims."

The contract with the company LeadsOnline will cost the city just over $37 thousand a year for three years, with a 3 percent increase in Year 4 and Year 5.

There will be no cost to businesses, who will now have one business day to electronically report their transactions.
