Wichita City council gives green light to new police substation

The Wichita City Council approved a plan to construct a new police substation in east Wichita.

Patrol East, located near Kellogg and Edgemoor, was originally built in 1989 and is the oldest substation in the city.  It was built to serve around 30-40 personnel but currently has around 117.

Wichita Police Chief Gordon Ramsay gave an example of what officers face daily coming to work there.

"Only a small number of officers have lockers, which means that most come to work in uniform and if they, which happens with some frequency, have something spilled on them or bodily fluids during their shift they must go home to change," he said.

The new substation will cost $7 million.  Construction on the 23,000 square foot facility will begin later this year and will be located next to the current facility.
