A Wichita man has died while trying to save a woman from drowning in a southwest Missouri river.

The incident happened just after 6:30 Friday evening on the Elk River near Noel, Missouri, about 50 miles south of Joplin.

A spokesperson with the Missouri Highway Patrol says a woman was swept underwater at a dam on the river. That's when 26-year-old Jacob Farley dived into the water to try and save her.

When members of the Noel Fire Department arrived on-scene, they were able to bring the woman to safety using a throw rope, but were unable to save the man.

Farley was pronounced dead at the scene.
