Wichita McConnell AFB: Stolen vehicle led to base closure

September 29, 2020 - 10:28 am

McConnell Air Force Base closed its gates Tuesday morning due to what the base called a security incident.

A spokesperson said in a release that an "underage civilian" in a stolen vehicle was taken into custody after refusing to stop at the gate at around 6 a.m.

"Security measures in place stopped the vehicle," the release said. "He fled on foot from the scene and was apprehended shortly thereafter."

McConnell said just after 7 a.m. on Facebook that all entry gates at the base were closed and advised those on base to remain indoors. A second post after 8:00 a.m. said the back gate was reopened, and entry and exit on base housing had resumed.

The suspect was being questioned.
